Oleh Luchyn is a 30-year-old defender from the village of Zymna Voda on the outskirts of Lviv. He was mobilized to the Armed Forces a year ago and soon joined the defense of Bakhmut. He was seriously wounded in late August, right in a trench where the enemy dropped a grenade from a drone. There were three defenders in the area of impact, but Oleh took the brunt of the attack. He received multiple shrapnel wounds. His legs suffered the most.

Because of the shelling, the wounded could not be evacuated for a long time. The stilettos stayed on Oleh’s legs for eight hours – the tissue began to die. So the doctors at the hospital had to amputate the limbs. Later, doctors in Dnipro, Kyiv and Lviv continued to save the defender’s life.

Oleh arrived at the UNBROKEN Center in a still extremely serious condition. Here’s what surgeon Marian Kuzmak says:

“The patient’s condition was complicated by a multidrug-resistant bacterial infection that was not controlled by antibiotic therapy. This greatly affected the functioning of his lungs and kidneys. In Dnipro, he was undergoing hemodialysis. When he was admitted to us, his internal organs were supported by devices. He spent ten days in our intensive care unit. First, we had to fight the infection. And when we succeeded, we closed the soft tissue defects that had arisen after the amputation of his limbs.”

The defender is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Physical therapists are working with him. Another step in his recovery is to remove the traces of war from his face, whose soft tissues and nasal septum were also damaged by shrapnel. As part of the joint project of the UNBROKEN Center and L’Oreal Ukraine – (Not) Time To Be Beautiful – our surgeons, together with their Odesa colleagues, will perform a nose reconstruction and plastic surgery. And then the specialists of the Center for Aesthetic Medicine of the First Medical Association of Lviv will finally restore the beauty by polishing scars and scars.

UNBROKEN Oleh Luchyn dreams of getting back on his feet again. He also wants to add a son to his family, where his daughter is already growing up.
